Lake Louise wildlife tours compared

Five options side by side: the summer sightseeing gondola above Lake Louise, two short animal-spotting drives on the Banff back roads, a full-day lakes trip and the Icefields Parkway run.

Updated 24 October 2026

In shortFive tours on this site take you into bear, elk and moose country around Lake Louise and Banff, from a 1 to 5 hour ride on the Lake Louise sightseeing gondola to 3-hour wildlife drives near the town of Banff and full days of 8 to 10 hours that add Moraine Lake or the Icefields Parkway. Guiding and commentary are in English, with a local guide on every option except the gondola, which you ride at your own pace. Choose by how much of the day you want to give up, and by whether you also want the lakes.

What the Lake Louise wildlife tours include

Only one of these five starts at Lake Louise itself: the summer sightseeing gondola, which carries riders to 2,101 m on the slopes above the valley. The Wildlife Interpretive Centre sits in Whitehorn Lodge, a short walk from the top of the gondola, and is included with a summer gondola ticket. The 2026 season ran daily 9:00 am to 4:30 pm from June 5 to October 11 and has finished, with the ride scheduled to return in spring 2027, so check availability before you build a day around it. In winter the lifts run 9:30 am to 4:30 pm and the sightseeing gondola 10:30 am to 4:00 pm, conditions permitting.

The two dedicated wildlife drives work the back roads and wildlife corridors around the town of Banff, which is 62 km from Lake Louise inside the same national park. Neither stops at the lake. The small-group tour winds up the Mount Norquay switchbacks and calls at Lake Minnewanka, the Hoodoos Trail, Surprise Corner and Bow Falls over 3 hours; the year-round morning tour covers Lake Minnewanka, Bow Falls, Surprise Corner, the Hoodoos Trail and Bankhead Ghost Town in the same 3 hours, with some stops subject to seasonal closures.

Parks Canada sets the viewing distances, and your guide will hold to them: at least 30 metres from deer, elk, sheep and moose, and at least 100 metres from bears, wolves, cougars and coyotes. Feeding, enticing or disturbing wildlife is illegal and can bring charges and fines of up to CAD 25,000. On the gondola you must drop nothing from the cabin and keep food away from animals.

Timing changes your odds. Parks Canada estimates about 65 grizzly bears live in Banff National Park; they leave their dens from late March to mid-May, shrub berries ripen from about mid-July to early August, and bear viewing from the Lake Louise slopes runs early April through November with the heaviest feeding from September to November. None of that guarantees anything. Animals move where they want, and no operator here promises a sighting.

The two full-day options put wildlife second. The Lake Louise and Moraine Lake day trip spends its time at the lakes, at Yoho National Park, the Lower Spiral Tunnels Viewpoint, Emerald Lake and the Natural Bridge, swapping in Marble Canyon from October 13 to May 31 when Moraine Lake is closed. The Icefields Parkway day runs north of Lake Louise to Bow Lake, Peyto Lake and the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre, with the itinerary adjusted around weather and recent sightings.

Which one fits you

Staying in Lake Louise village with half a day spare: take the summer sightseeing gondola. It is the only option on this page that leaves from the lake area, it runs 1 to 5 hours depending on how long you linger at the top, grizzlies are watched from enclosed cabins and open chairs, and the Wildlife Interpretive Centre is included with the ticket. It rates 4.3 ★ (78 reviews) and is out of season until spring 2027.

Based in Banff or Canmore and set on seeing animals: book the 3-hour small-group drive from CAD 149, with a maximum of 12 guests, hotel pickup at select Banff locations, water refills for your own bottle and a Polaroid souvenir. Departures sit late in the day in summer, from 6:30 pm in June and July down to 4:00 pm from October 1 to 12, and at 2:00 pm from October 13 to April 30.

Want the same stops earlier and cheaper: the year-round Banff wildlife tour runs mornings from CAD 89 for 3 hours, with a professional guide, hands-on interpretive tools, fresh water in summer and hot chocolate in winter, plus a maple cookie snack at a scenic stop. It rates 4.6 ★ (231 reviews).

First visit, and the lakes matter more: the Lake Louise and Moraine Lake day trip from CAD 79 covers 8 to 10 hours and rates 4.9 ★ (1602 reviews). You watch for animals from the vehicle between stops rather than hunting for them, and Moraine Lake permit and access are included from June 1 to October 11 or 12. Lunch is at Lake Louise Village at your own expense.

A full day and a taste for long mountain roads: the Icefields Parkway small-group tour from CAD 289 runs 8 hours with a maximum of 12 guests, a picnic lunch of a sandwich, fruit and a baked treat, and stops at Bow Lake, Peyto Lake and the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre. There is no cell coverage on the Parkway, so tell anyone waiting for you that you will be offline most of the day.
